Rural roads facilitate farmers

In 2011, villages around Changji City have newly built 343 kilometers of rural roads. This not only improves the travel conditions for farmers and herdsmen, but also helps them get wealth.

Yang Yanxiang lives in Guangming village of Changji City. He has many happy memories about 2011. For example, he moved into a new house, and his 30-mu tomato was sold at a good price. But  he used to worry about the sales of his tomato every year before the village got a new road.

"In the past, we had to find trucks to transport our tomato. Drivers often asked us if the road condition was good. They wouldn't come if it's poor. Or they asked us to pay higher transport fee after they came."

Mr. Yang told us he paid only half of the previous transport fee after the village road got through. Besides, less than 1% of tomatoes were damaged. His annual earnings from tomato alone increase to over 40,000 yuan from the previous 30,000 yuan.

Driving for over 40 kilometers away from Mr. Yang's house, there is a bridge that hasn't got through yet. The bridge is less than 10 kilometers to the herding areas.

"This is Santunhe Bridge in Changji City. It will open to traffic in June 2012. By then, the journey for winter livestock transfer can be shortened by 40 kilometers."

Herdsmen told XJTV that now they need about 7 days for livestock transfer. But it will take only 3 days after the bridge gets through. They will also be able to use trucks to transfer livestock.
