The Mongolian president on Tuesday rejected four out of six ministerial nominations, citing that their legislator identities may lead to an imbalanced government, the government's press service said.

Rejecting the nominations for first deputy prime minister and ministers of finance, defense and transportation, President Tsakhia Elbegdorj moved to block chairman of the ruling Mongolian People's Party and three members of the parliament from the cabinet.

"A person who is not a lawmaker of the parliament should be nominated for a cabinet member's position in order to ensure accountability between the Parliament, which is the top legislative body of the state, and the Government, which exercises executive authority," Elbegdorj said.

"The portfolio of first deputy prime minister of the coalition government is no longer necessary," said the president, who is former chairman of the Democratic Party of Mongolia, rival of the Mongolian People's Party in the parliament.

Nominations for the minister of health and minister of nature, environment and tourism have been ratified.

Six ministerial positions were vacated when the Democratic Party of Mongolia quit the coalition government two weeks ago. Prime Minister Sukhbaatar Batbold on Monday nominated six members of his ruling Mongolian People's Party to replace the opposition ministers.
