GAC Group is expected to start selling automobiles in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, for the first time this March.

GAC Motor's Xinjiang branch, located at the White Bird Lake New Area in the Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone (Toutunhe district), has a total area of over 30,000 square meters, and has a production capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year. GAC Group automobiles have already entered a trial production phase.

The branch completed the first phase of construction at the end of last year, reaching an annual production capacity of 50,000 vehicles. In its second phase, it plans to build stamping workshops and increase its production capacity to 100,000 vehicles. It is expected to introduce more vehicle models and produce new energy cars.

"These cars will be sold in Xinjiang and throughout northwest China, and the market will expand to Central Asian countries," said Yan Guidong, general manager of GAC Motor's Xinjiang branch.

This project, undertaken by the province of Guangdong to support the industrial development of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, marks the first time a Chinese domestic auto brand has opened factories in the region since the joint venture brand Shanghai Volkswagen settled there in 2012.

Xinjiang province, Urumqi city, and Toutunhe district all firmly supported its establishment and construction, and have implemented favorable policies since the project began in March, 2016.

GAC Group's Chuanqi GS4, priced between 99,800 and 146,800 yuan ($22,609), is a popular small-size SUV with low fuel consumption and excellent performance. Since it entered the market, its monthly sales have ranked highly among compact SUVs nationwide. In 2017, it sold more than 310,000 vehicles.

After the Chuanqi GS4 begins to be produced locally, consumers in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region will be able to enjoy a lower price, as well as more quality services.
