China Mobile's branch in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region plans to invest 12.5 billion yuan ($1.97 billion) in building eight major projects from 2018 to 2022 to promote the development of information technology and socio-economic development in Urumqi.

The decision was announced when the Urumqi municipal people's government signed a cooperative agreement with Xinjiang Mobile on Feb 9. According to the agreement, both parties will promote smart city construction by developing information technology in key fields.

Relying on its trustworthy and safe communication technology, the local branch of State-owned China Mobile will continue to build a communication network in Urumqi and press forward with a strategy of establishing a fast world-class mobile communication and optical network with wide coverage.

In addition, Xinjiang Mobile will provide safer, more convenient, and efficient communication services for Urumqi by implementing a series of projects in cloud computing, big data and IoT industries.

Xinjiang Mobile has already accumulated rich experience in building a smart city. It has launched more than 60 intelligent applications in transportation, education, healthcare and tourism which have greatly contributed to Urumqi's social development.
