Avalanches killed a villager in Altay Prefecture Thursday and two herdsmen in Ili Prefecture on Sunday. The fourth, a Kazakh villager of Toli County, Tacheng Prefecture, was found frozen to death in the gobi desert on Sunday.

Heavy snow strands 400 on highway in Xinjiang More than 400 people in 50 vehicles were stranded for more than a day on a national highway in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region due to heavy snow since early Wednesday.
The vehicles had been stopped on the National Highway 216 in north Xinjiang's Altay City, neighboring Mongolia, said an official of Fuyun County's highway transport bureau.

New cold front to keep nation in deep freeze A new cold front is coming from the north of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and it will keep most parts of China in a freeze this weekend, the Central Meteorological Station (CMS) said Thursday.
Forecasters said that northern areas of China including Beijing, Tianjin, parts of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and north of Hebei Province will see light to moderate snow today. But the snowfall will not sustain.
