The 7th China Xinjiang International Dance Festival opened Sunday evening in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, showcasing a rich blend of global and ethnic dance traditions.
This year's festival features 24 art troupes from China and eight other countries -- the United States, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Cambodia. A total of 52 performances will be staged across seven cities and prefectures in Xinjiang from July 20 to August 5.
Erkin Tuniyaz, deputy secretary of the Communist Party of China Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Regional Committee and chairman of the regional government, attended the opening ceremony. He said the festival has become a significant cultural symbol and a dynamic platform for promoting cross-cultural exchange under the Belt and Road Initiative. Its growing scale and international visibility, he noted, continue to enhance its global brand and influence.
On Sunday, a 40-member delegation from Uzbekistan arrived in Hotan Prefecture of Xinjiang, where they were greeted at the airport by local dancers with a traditional welcome performance. The lively scene quickly turned into a joyous cultural exchange as the Uzbek artists joined in the dancing.
"It's a rare chance to see the Italian ballet Carmen right here at home," said Li Jin, a Urumqi resident and arts professional. He added that he had bought tickets for multiple shows and looked forward to attending them with his family.
Since its launch, the folk dance festival has brought together 138 art troupes from more than 70 countries and regions, staging over 200 acclaimed Chinese and international productions.
The event is jointly hosted by China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the State Council Information Office, and the People's Government of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
